Draft Policy Addresses Employee Concealed Carry

Riley-County-Commission-office1Riley County department heads raised concerns regarding the new concealed carry bill, that went into effect July 1st, during a previous county commission meeting.  Department heads were concerned about concealed carry for their employees, when they are not in county buildings, but are working off grounds.

Department heads came to a consensus, during one of their recent department heads meeting, that they want a consistent policy in place for all departments.  County Counselor, Clancy Holeman wrote a draft personnel policy amendment prohibiting employee caoncealed carry while on the job.

Holeman mentioned, “the statute does not say anything about unlicensed concealed carry, so regardless of whether a building is exempt or not, county personnel policies are perfectly free to regulate unlicensed concealed carry”.

Commissioners raised concerns about liability for employees, now that the concealed carry bill has been put into place.  Holeman met with the county’s insurance company, and the representative indicated he expects a waiting period until companies decide what to do.  He also told Holeman, the law could impact schools being insured with different companies.

The 2014 budget was approved during a previous Riley County Commission meeting, but the process isn’t over for Budget and Finance Officer, Johnette Shepek.

Shepek mentioned they are on track to meet all of the required deadlines, including publishing the budget and holding a public hearing.

The final adoption of the budget must be done on August 25th.

Two items were approved during the commission meeting.

The first was Emergency Management Director, Pat Collins’s request for a three week extension period for their part time staff position.

Health Department Director, Brenda Nickel present the second item, asking for the only uncertified WIC dietician to attend out of state training in order to be a certified breastfeeding educator.
