WESTWOOD HILLS, Kan. (AP) A small suburban Kansas City town is asking to be placed on state and federal registers of historic places.
Westwood Hills is one of the first suburbs developed in Kansas by urban planning pioneer J.C. Nichols. The city is only 5.5 blocks and has 359 residents.
The Kansas City Star reports no other city in Kansas city been placed entirely on the national list.
A state review board will consider the city’s request Saturday. If it’s approved, the request will go to the National Park Service for federal approval. An endorsement by the state increases chances the town will get on the national register.
The listing would provide protection for the town’s 1920s and ’30s architecture, winding streets and tall trees. And it could make some preservation grants available.
