MHS To Conduct “School Safety Week”

    0
By KMAN Staff on September 13, 2013 Local News, Manhattan

MHS East Campus will conduct a “School Safety Week”,  September 16 – 19. The purpose of this week is to plan and prepare for certain emergency situations. We can never prepare for every scenario, but training and exercising drills puts us all in a better position to respond should an actual event occur.

The schedule for next week is as follows:

Monday September 16 – 1:30 PM – Severe Weather sheltering drill. MHS is required by law to exercise this drill at least 3 times annually. MHS will have assistance from Riley County Emergency Management in evaluating the school’s response.

Tuesday September 17 – 9:30 AM – Lockdown Drill. This is a very sobering drill to conduct, and simulates any perceived threat that has entered our building. Local law enforcement will assist MHS in conducting and evaluating this drill.

Wednesday September 18 – 9:00 AM – Lockout and Evacuation Drills. A lockout is initiated when ever there is a perceived threat outside of the school building. For the most part, activities continue inside the building but no one is granted access to come into the building or leave the building. An evacuation to an alternate location may occur whenever it is deemed unsafe to remain in the current building. This could be due to structural damage (after a fire, tornado, earthquake, etc.)

Thursday September 19 – 1:30 PM – Fire Drill. This drill is required by law to be exercised monthly while school is in session.
