Tribe Defense Rules In Win Over Vikings

Quarterback Kellen Meyers threw a pair of touchdown passes and the Manhattan High Defense forced three turnovers and came up with a huge goal line stand as the Indians defeated Topeka Seaman High School 19-7 Friday night in the Capitol City.

MHS got on the scoreboard during their second possession when Meyers connected with Winston Dimel for a 68-yard pass and run play that didn’t stop until Dimel reached the end zone. The Tribe’s lead grew to 9-0 in the second quarter on a safety that could have easily resulted in a touchdown for Manhattan but the officials ruled that a Viking player had control of the ball in the end zone. Joe Trujillo’s 27-yard Field Goal at the very end of the first half made the score 12-0 in favor of Manhattan.

After Seaman turned the ball over on their first play of the second half, Meyers found Brett Fehr open and Fehr did the rest, scoring on a 23-yard touchdown play and the extra point made the score 19-0. Following a Manhattan fumble, Seaman marched 45 yards for their first score on a Ryder Chaffey one-yard run to close the gap to 19-7.

The key moment of the game happened with just over four minutes left when Seaman was mounting another drive. On a fourth down and one play from practically the one-inch line, Running Back Brady Barnes was deined the end zone by the Tribe Defense and Manhattan was able to run out the majority of the clock from that point on.

Manhattan (2-1, 2-0) will be on the road next Friday night when they take on Highland Park. Kickoff will be at 7:00 p.m.
