Area Athletes Qualify for State

– The Manhattan High volleyball team is off to the 6A state tournament this weekend after winning their Sub-State tournament at home on Saturday. The Tribe defeated Topeka High in the semifinals 25-13 and 25-17, and then knocked off Washburn Rural in the finals 24-26, 25-14, and 25-23. MHS will be the #6 seed at the Kansas Expocentre in Topeka, and is in a pool with Blue Valley, Maize, and Blue Valley Northwest on Friday.

– Both Manhattan High cross country teams qualified for the 6A state meet next weekend at Rim Rock Farm in Lawrence on Saturday. The Indian boys claimed the regional on Saturday in Junction City, easily taking the title over Wichita North and Lawrence Free State. Chris Melgares won the individual championship in a time of 16:08. The Tribe girls finished third to regional champ Free State and Maize. Alaina Schroeder (Shray-durr) came in third place with a time of 14:58. .

– The Wamego boys cross country qualified to run at home in the 4A state meet with a regional championship at Bonner Springs on Saturday. Jacob Davis placed fifth with a time of 17:04. The Lady Raiders didn’t qualify for state as a team, but Allison Suefert (See-fert) will run as an individual after a 12th place finish at regionals in a time of 16:27.

– The Riley County boys cross country team won the 3A regional meet at Sabetha on Saturday, edging out Hiawatha and Silver Lake. Blake Dodson led the Falcons, coming in third with a time of 16:56. Two Riley County girls will be in the field at Rim Rock, Beka Silvia and Abi Collins. Rock Creek’s Jacy Johnston also qualified for state in eighth place.

– The Frankfort boys country team took the 1A regional meet at the Lincoln Golf Course on Saturday, as they bested Wetmore and Tescott. Adam Koch will lead the Wildcats into Wamego after winning the individual regional title with a time of 17:37.
