Leti Romero and Haley Texada combined for 31 points as the K-State women’s basketball team beat Tennessee State 85-53 in both team’s season opener at Bramlage Coliseum on Friday night. The Cats jumped out to an 11-0 lead at the first media timeout, and never looked back en route to a 40-19 halftime edge. The Tigers didn’t get any closer than 14 points in the second half.

Romero scored 16 points on 6 of 10 shooting from the floor, and was perfect on two attempts from both three-point range and the free throw line. She dished out eight assists, compared to just two turnovers, and grabbed seven rebounds. Texada picked up 15 points on 6 of 9 shooting, including a pair of treys, while adding five rebounds and two assists. Breanna Lewis led the Cats with 10 rebounds in her debut. K-State (1-0) shot just short of 50 percent from beyond the arc, going 9 for 19 as a squad.

The Wildcats started four freshmen, with Romero, Lewis, Kindred Wesemann, and Erica Young joining Texada in the lineup.

Tennessee State (0-1) was led in scoring by Chelsea Hudson with 16 points.

Coach Deb Patterson’s Wildcats will return the court in just over 36 hours when they host Charlotte on Sunday afternoon at 12:30pm. Pregame begins at noon on NewsRadio 1350 KMAN from the K-State Sports Network with Brian Smoller and Claire Coggins.
