The Manhattan High girls and boys basketball teams both picked up wins to start the 2013-2014 season against Derby. The girls under head coach Scott Mall picked up a hard fought 53-47 victory and the boys game was fast paced but MHS prevailed 80-63 when it was all said and done.
“It was a good win, it was a struggle all the way between some missed early shots, foul trouble and sending (Derby) them to the free throw line and that kept them in the ball game,” said MHS girls head coach Scott Mall.
Tribe stars Caroline Ballard and Darby Price spent some time on the bench with foul trouble most of the game, which gave a chance to some of the younger players to get their feet wet. The Indians were able to make some clutch free throws down the stretch to secure the victory.
“We made a point to talk about just getting the ball in the paint, because we thought we had an advantage there,” said MHS boys head coach Tim Brooks.
Alex Stitt had a career high 27 points for the Tribe while Payton Stevens poured in 25 points. MHS will have a week to prepare for Dodge City next Friday night with the girls to tip off at 6:00 pm and all the action can be heard on KMAN.
