Former Manhattan Mayor and City Commissioner Jim Sherow who is eyeing a possible run as a Democratic candidate for the 1st District Congressional seat from Kansas had harsh words for incumbent Tim Huelskamp after Huelskamp voted against the Farm Bill Wednesday night. Sherow released the following statement:
“Rep. Huelskamp votes with his principles. The problem is that farmers can’t plant ideology in their soil, and they can’t put it on the table for dinner. After getting kicked off the Ag Committee and being left out of the compromise negotiations because of his deliberate infighting with Republican leadership, Rep. Huelskamp has left Kansas farmers, ranchers and agribusiness men and women without a voice on this crucial piece of legislation.”
Sherow has formed an exploratory committee which will help him decide if he wants to run for the seat’s Democratic nomination.
After two years of trying the House passed the Farm Bill by a vote of 251-166. The bill is expected to be easily approved by the U.S. Senate and then be signed into law by President Obama. The bill will make small reductions in spending on Food Stamps and allow some farmers to grow hemp for the first time.
Rep. Huelskamp had no immediate comment on the Farm Bill vote or reaction to Sherow’s statement Wednesday night.
