Leticia Romero scored 19 points and Kansas State finished the game with a 12-0 run to rally past Texas Tech 60-54 in Big 12 Women’s Basketball action Saturday at Bramlage Coliseum.
The Red Raiders who remain winless in conference play, have suffered many close losses and Saturday’s game was no different. However, early on Texas Tech was fighting the Wildcats nearly basket for basket as K-State could not sustain a lead of larger than six points. The Red Raiders scored six straight points to grab their first lead of the game at 22-20 before the teams went into halftime tied at 24-24.
In the second half it was much of the same as K-State and Texas Tech both shot below 40 percent for the game. The lead would end up changing hands 12 times over the course of the half but it was Tech that held a 54-48 advantage with 4:12 remaining in the contest. Romero’s jumper cut the deficit to 54-50 then after a Red Raider turnover, Katya Leick knocked down a three-pointer to make the score 54-53 with 3:27 left. A pair of free throws by Jessica Sheble gave K-State the lead for good at 55-54 with 2:41 remaining and five more free throws after that provided the final margin of 60-54 allowing the Cats to snap a three-game losing streak.
It was not your ordinary game Saturday afternoon in Bramlage as this was the annual Play for Kay game raising awareness about Breast Cancer. The game is in honor of the late Kay Yow who coached at North Carolina State for more than three decades and who fought Breast Cancer for over 10 years. Yow who has been inspiration for many who are fighting cancer won 737 games in her career, 680 of them at the helm of the Wolf Pack. In honor of the occasion, K-State donned special pink uniforms as did many of the announced 4,933 fans in attendance as well as cheerleaders, band members and even Willie the Wildcat.
At halftime, several members of the 2003-04 Big 12 Champion Women’s Basketball team were honored at mid-court with Marysville’s Kendra Wecker and Clay Center’s Nicole Ohlde drawing the loudest cheers.
Kansas State (10-14, 4-9) will next be in action on Wednesday at TCU. Tip-off in Ft. Worth is set for 7 p.m.
