Mustangs Claim Season Opener from K-State

The power pitching duo of Matt Imhof and Reid Reilly combined for a two-hitter as #27 Cal Poly shut out #18 K-State 3-0 on Friday night at Baggett Stadium in San Luis Obispo, CA.  Imhof (1-0) struck out a Mustang Division I record 14 batters over seven innings plus, scattering two hits and four walks.  Reilly came on for a six-out save with a runner on first in the top of the eighth, and quickly dispatched the Cats following a leadoff walk.  Ross Kivett and RJ Santigate each supplied an infield hit, and only three K-State runners reached second base against Cal Poly.

Wildcat sophomore pitcher Levi MaVorhis threw up five shutout innings of his own, giving up just two hits while striking out four with no walks over 67 pitches.  The Mustangs put up their only runs in the bottom of the sixth when Landon Busch (0-1) loaded the bases with only one out.  Jimmy Allen put Cal Poly on the board with a 2-run single off K-State freshman Jake Fromson, who also issued a bases loaded walk to Mark Mathias.

The Cats will look to even their record against the Mustangs with another 8:00pm first pitch on Saturday night.  The lone senior on K-State’s pitching staff, lefty Jared Moore, gets the start against Cal Poly freshman right hander Slater Lee.  Pregame begins online at 1350kman.com with Rob Voelker and Chris Kutz at 7:30, and the game will be joined in progress on the air after the Wildcat men’s basketball game at Baylor.
