Christal Caldwell scored 21 points and three other players added 10 apiece as 13th-ranked West Virginia used a first half run to cruise past Kansas State 61-40 in Women’s Basketball action Saturday evening at Bramlage Coliseum.

The Wildcats took a 6-0 lead on the strength of three-point baskets by Leticia Romero and Katya Leick fin the game’s first two minutes but after that the Mountaineers forged head with a 15-2 run for a seven-point lead. After K-State cut the margin to 16-12 an 18-7 surge by West Virginia allowed the Mountaineers to enjoy a 34-19 halftime advantage.

In the second half, West Virginia’s lead stretched to 20 points and then it stayed there for a while as the teams went through a stretch of scoring a combined six points in nearly six minutes. The Mountaineers led by as many as 25 points before settling for the 19-point win and improving to 4-0 all-time against K-State. Ashlynn Knoll paced the Wildcats with 13 points while Kindred Wesemann added 11. It was a rough shooting night for K-State as they were held to just over 27 percent from the floor by West Virginia’s stingy defense.

Kansas State (10-16, 4-11) will next be in action for round two of the Sunflower Showdown Wednesday night in Lawrence against arch-rival Kansas. The Jayhawks won at Bramlage in the first meetinga between the two teams last month and own a three-game winning streak in the series. Tipoff at Allen Fieldhouse is set for 7 p.m.
