All local schools, including Kansas State University, announced Monday that there would be no school on Tuesday. According to Riley County Public Information Officer, Mat Droge, the police department definitely does not have a snow day.
Two minor accidents occurred Tuesday morning, due to the winter weather, and the department assisted four motorists who got stuck on the roads. In order to avoid accidents, Droge suggests increasing the following distance between you and other vehicles.
KMAN also spoke to Jennifer Bowen with the National Weather Service in Topeka. Bowen mentioned wind gusts are supposed to pick up through Wednesday morning, and could reach up to 35 mph. Bowen said this is where the problems start, because the snow is expected to drift.
Wind chill values are also expected to reach -10 to -15 degrees.
Accidents are starting to pick up involving the winter weather. One on I-70 in particular seems to possibly be serious. The injury accident took place around mile marker 322.
Riley County Emergency Management Director, Pat Collins said accidents are starting to pick up, and he only expects it to get worse during the evening hours.
