While a sixth grader is obviously way too young to drive, a special sixth grader at Bergman Elementary school is getting recognition by a local car dealer. Shailyn Russell will be presented with the Ed Schram Legacy “Drive for Success” Award Friday, with a variety of activities planned in addition to that presenation.

Russell is pleased with the recognition and says it means a lot to her to get something so special for what she does in class and around other people. She says it’s her friends and family who keep her up and going.

Russell’s teacher Dennis Eickhoff explains why she was singled out for the award, saying she exemplifies the pillars of character at Bergman, which include responsibility, respect, caring, fairiness, and trustworthiness with all the students at Bergman.

Russell she lost her father to death a few years ago, but manages to keep upbeat. She says her favorite  time of the day is lunch, but she also enjoys doing experiments in science with Mr. Eickhoff’s class.

In addition to  Russell receiving the Ed Schram Legacy “Drive for succes” award, Bergman elementary is having a variety of events to raise money for its PTO Friday, with test drives being offered at the school for contributions beginning at 4:30. a cookout sponsored by Leonardville State bank and Farmer insurance, and a Pinewood Derby in the gym. Guest DJ Tyler Jackson of KMAN’s sister station Hot Country B104.7 will also be present.
