U-S Senator Jerry Moran of Manhattan is a Rotarian–and he was proud to address what is now his hometown group at lunch Thursday.

Moran talked about the importance of getting construction going on the National Bio and Agri-Defense Facility.  The Senator also addressed other issues of importance to his fairly new hometown, including Fort Riley, funding for the Manhattan Regional Airport renovation, and floodplain concerns.

The Manhattan Regional Airport is a priorty for  Moran, who visited with fellow Manhattan Rotarians Thursday noon. The local Senator talked about recently meeting with a local delegation from Manhattan, including the city manager, mayor, and a commissioner.

And Moran says floodplain concerns are another priority for his new hometown, a far cry from the drought-like conditions in his former hometown of Hays.

Senator Moran also commented to KMAN regarding all three Kansas teams being in the NCAA tournament, saying he already has a motel reservation in Texas for the final four match-up.

Senator Moran told his fellow Rotarians Thursday he came from humble beginnings in Plainville, Kansas, with a father in the oil industry and mother who worked for the utility company. He adds he is a first generation college graduate in his family–and got interested in politics as a college intern in Washington D.C,the summer of Watergate. Moran drew some laughter when he talked about one of his first community roles. He says he did something out of the ordinary, as suggested by President Reagan–and that was to serve as President of the Day Care Board when he was unmarried and had no kids.
