The Wamego City Commission recognized a young poster contest winner.  At Tuesday’s meeting, City Manager Merl Page announced  a special recognition proclamation.  As an ongoing member of the National Arbor Day Foundation, the Kansas Chapter created the Kansas Arbor Day Poster Contest for children, and ten-year old Dacey Vanderbilt, daughter of Andrew and Sara Vanderbilt, submitted the winning entry from the North Central District of Kansas.   The Proclamation was issued to officially compliment and recognize Dacey on her achievement in winning the contest.

In other business, City Manager Merl Page announced the resignation of Commissioner Larry Fechter due to personal reasons.   He said Fechter has been on the Commission since 1999 following employment with the City.  He said Fechter has been a pleasure to work with, and the sentiment was echoed by the Commissioners.   Because Fechter was acting Mayor Pro-Tem, Vic Enns accepted the nomination as Mayor Pro-Tem and presided at this meeting.

The Wamego City Commission reviewed the annual reports from three agencies.   At Tuesday’s meeting, City Manager Merl Page called on Hospital Board Chair Lanny Bosse (boss – e), who reported the Hospital Board consists of 5 members and complimented management for numerous awards the Wamego Health Center has received.  He said the Board voted to retire the debt last year out of reserve fund, which drew down the reserves.   He said those reserves have since been replenished and there are now ample operating reserves and revenues have been steady, so everything is operating  just fine.

The Planning Commission operates with a 5 member board, with Cliff Meyer as Chairman.  Meyer reported adding the Sidewalk Master Plan to their agenda and hiring a summer intern to assist in creating the Sidewalk study for the City of Wamego.  Page said the intern is a K-State student working on his Master Degree, and will be shared with Pottawatomie County Economic Development.  Meyer added that 2013 was a fairly slow year, with only 2 re-plats and 2 re-zonings.

The Zoning Appeals Board Chairman, Woody Surs reported a busy year because of changes in State laws.  He said there were 18 special use permits to daycare homes and one for a home photography studio, plus granting three zoning variances.
