World Book Night Celebration

0
By KMAN Staff on April 16, 2014 Local News, Manhattan

The library received a grant to participate in this year’s World Book Night celebration on Wednesday, April 23. Library staff and volunteers will be giving out free books in Aggieville, Downtown Manhattan, and the Little Apple Brewery from 6:00 to 8:00 pm in effort to raise awareness about the library and its services.

World Book Night is an annual celebration of the printed word, taking place on April 23rd to celebrate the lives and work of William Shakespeare and Miguel de Cervantes. This year, Manhattan Public Library is the lucky recipient of a grant from World Book Night U.S. to help foster a love of reading and books in our community. On April 23rd, library staff will go out into the community and hand out free books in order to inspire, or re-inspire, readers. As part of the grant, MPL will receive 100 copies of the 2013 hit novel, Where’d You Go, Bernadette by Maria Semple and 100 copies of the classic mystery novel, After the Funeral by Agatha Christie. MPL will also be distributing copies of Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger and a variety of children’s books.

During World Book Night, MPL will be visiting several locations. From 6:00-10:00 p.m., you can find library staff walking through City Park, downtown Manhattan, and Aggieville. You also will be able to spot us at a number of local hotspots that have generously agreed to host our book-giving activities, including Hibachi Hut, Varsity Donuts, Bluestem Bistro, and Little Apple Brewery. MPL staff will also be at Aggie Central Station for their Local Love open-mic night, starting at 10:00 p.m. Manhattanites are encouraged to stop by these locations and chat with library staff about books and reading. Follow Manhattan Public Library on Twitter (@ManhattanPL) and Facebook to find out more about specific times and locations.

This is the first year that Manhattan Public Library has participated in this event. For more information visit the Manhattan Public Library at 629 Poyntz Avenue, call (785) 776-4741, or visit the library’s website at www.mhklibrary.org. Find the library on Facebook, Pinterest, Twitter, and Foursquare too.
