On Monday, May 19, a replacement project began on the U.S. 24 Bridge located between First Street and Grand Avenue in St. Mary’s (Pottawatomie County). Project work includes replacement of the existing 24-foot wide bridge structure with a 40-foot wide structure, grading, surfacing of the bridge approaches and seeding.
Work is takin place during daylight hours, Monday through Friday, with some occasional Saturday work., Eastbound and westbound U.S. 24 is reduced to one lane each direction with a 10.6-foot lane width restriction in both directions through the project work zone throughout the project
The new bridge will be constructed one-half at a time, so traffic will be shifted during the three separate phases of project construction. Traffic will be directed through the project work zone via signage, cones and concrete barrier. Drivers should expect minor delays throughout the project duration.
The Kansas Department of Transportation urges all motorists to be alert, obey the warning signs, and “Give ‘Em a Brake!” when approaching and driving through the project work zone.
Ebert Construction Company, Inc. (Wamego, KS) is the primary contractor on this bridge replacement project with a total contract cost of $815,763. The scheduled completion date for the bridge replacement project is late October 2014, weather permitting.
This project is funded by T-WORKS, the transportation program passed by the Kansas Legislature in May 2010. Find out more about this and other T-WORKS projects at: http://kdotapp.ksdot.org/TWorks/.
