Kansas State University is continuing its legacy of producing Fulbright award winners to represent the United States.

Adam Miller, a May 2012 master’s degree graduate in Spanish second language acquisition, Overland Park, is a 2014-2015 Fulbright U.S. Student grant recipient to Argentina, and Jacob Schroeder, sophomore in chemistry, Silver Lake, is a 2014-2015 Fulbright U.S. Summer Institute award winner to Scotland.

The Fulbright programs create international educational exchange opportunities to increase mutual understanding between the people of the United States and the people of other countries.

Miller will work as an English teaching assistant in Argentina for an academic year starting in spring 2015. His interests in the country come from the literary works of Argentina’s Luisa Valenzuela, which inspired many of Miller’s student research projects.

“This award means so much to me,” Miller said. “Upon becoming a Fulbright award alum, I hope to pursue a doctorate at Georgetown in sociolinguistics, with the specific goal of studying the effects of social media on language change. This award is exemplary of the support and family atmosphere that are the hallmarks of K-State.”

Miller is a postsecondary coach for Kauffman Scholars Inc., a college access and scholarship program in Kansas City, Missouri, for low-income urban students. While a student at Kansas State University, he was a member of the university’s Graduate Student Association, a Spanish tutor, graduate teaching assistant and admissions representative. A graduate of Olathe East High School, he is the son of Willie and Marjorie Miller, Overland Park.

Schroeder will study this summer at the University of Dundee and the University of Strathclyde in the United Kingdom. He will be learning about Scotland’s culture, identity and innovation.

“Upon learning I received a place on the program, I was very excited for this opportunity to study abroad at two top universities in Scotland through the Fulbright Commission,” Schroeder said. “As a participant, I will truly become a global citizen, create strong connections with my fellow participants and learn the cultural and historical impact of Scotland in the United Kingdom. The Fulbright Summer Institute in Scotland is an experience that will add meaning to my education in a very unique and positive way.”

Schroeder is a member of Alpha Chi Sigma chemistry fraternity and secretary of the university’s Philosophy Club. His honors, scholarships and awards include Kansas State University’s Presidential Scholarship, Undergraduate Research Award from the College of Arts & Sciences, Phi Kappa Phi sophomore scholarship, Gamma Sigma Delta sophomore scholarship and Phi Lambda Upsilon Chemistry Department Award. A graduate of Silver Lake High School, he is the son of Jon and Melissa Schroeder, Silver Lake.
