In what some are calling a sudden move, President Barack Obama is trying to re-establish ties with Cuba after nearly 60 years. U-S Senator Jerry Moran of Manhattan reminded KMAN in a live interview Thursday morning he supports the effort in at least one respect–when it comes to agricultural trade and increased travel for U-S and Cuban citizens between the two countries. Moran says no other country abides by the embargo, meaning the United States has been on its own.
And he is happy about the release of Alan Gross with the Agency of International Development. The Senator says he’s offered resolutions encouraging that to happen and met with Mrs. Gross. Moran adds he’s lobbied the Cuban government actively for the Agency of International Development contractor’s release. Alan Gross was arrested in December of 2009 after a two day trial and was given a 15 year prison sentence by Cuban authorities for facilitating communications between Cuba’s Jewish Community and the rest of the world.
However some of the aspects of re-establishing ties with Cuba concern Moran and he says they need more work before being implemented.
