“Bad News” for School Board Finances

usd 383-feb 26Board members expressed concern with viewing the budget reduction planning numbers, as they knew the news would not be good.

Business and Finance Director, Lew Faust stated there are still “lots of unknowns at this point”, and the numbers are just projected estimates.  He added, the numbers could change many times over the coming months.

Faust estimated the projected local impact on the state budget reductions for the coming school year will be around $1,755,000.

Prior to this discussion, a few board members mentioned their frustration and disappointment with Governor, Sam Brownback’s recent state of the state address.  Board member, Dave Colburn stated, “he lied to us”.

Both Colburn and board member, Aaron Estabrook said Brownback is not following through with the statements he made during his campaign.

Two items were unanimously approved during the meeting:  the bike pathway easement request at Manhattan High School East and the College Hill Preschool phase 1 improvements bid.

The board recognized 2nd grade teacher at Bluemont Elementary, Austyn McNew on his recent Horizon award achievement, from the Kansas State Department of Education.  Board members also expressed gratitude to Associate Superintendent, Robert Seymour, who recently announced his plans to retire.

In addition to board member spoken reports, members, Darrell Edie and Dave Colburn said they both hope to keep their school board seats.  Edie filed recently, and Colburn said he intends to file soon.
