TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) In a few months, Kansas residents will be able to carry a concealed gun without a state permit. Governor Sam Brownback signed the bill into law Thursday, saying gun owners in the state have shown they’re responsible. Alaska, Arizona, Vermont and Wyoming have the same policy. The Kansas law takes effect in July.

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) A Republican legislator warns that Kansas risks the same sort of national backlash as Indiana and Arkansas if lawmakers pass a proposal aimed at protecting college religious groups. But a GOP colleague says backing down would be — in his words — “catering to the mob.” The House has passed a bill designed to give religious groups at state colleges and universities more control over their membership.

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) The ride-booking company Uber says a bill lawmakers approved Thursday could drive it out of Kansas. The state House has passed a transportation bill requiring companies to have additional insurance and do background checks on drivers through the Kansas Bureau of Investigation.

CONCORDIA, Kan. (AP) A pair of Kansas school districts say they will end the school year early because of state aid reductions. The Concordia school district will release students on May 15th rather than May 21st. And the Twin Valley School District will dismiss May 8th instead of May 20th.
