Children of all ages, along with parents and grandparents, showed up for the Manhattan Public Library’s summer reading kick-off Saturday. Public Relations Coordinator Danielle Schapaugh tells KMAN it’s a fun time of year for readers when they can read whatever they want.
For every 10 minutes a child spends reading they get a sticker on their reading log–and once they’ve logged a certain number they get a prize.
Last year more than 22-hundred children, 370 teens, and 460 adults participated in the summer reading program and together logged more than one million minutes of reading time.Hopes are for 3,000 children this year, and  500 teens and 500 adults.
Children’s Library Assistant and Librarian Jessica Long said one popular attraction at Saturday’s event was a super hero training course for children to go through–along with this year’s theme, “Every Hero Has a Story.”
In addition, library employees were dressed as super heroes. There was also a magic show with Ken Garwick and crafts and games during the Saturday event.
Children’s Librarian Brian Ingalsbe says this year there’s more room for children to participate, with the recent expansion of the Children’s Library. And if you missed Saturday’s event, it’s not too late to sign up. You can sign up on line at mhklibrary.org. or stop by the library any time.
