Graduate students and their families gathered in Bramlage Coliseum Friday afternoon for their commencement ceremony. This commencement was one of several ceremonies at K-State Manhattan and K-State Salina campuses. During this Graduate School Commencement, former U.S. Senator and Kansas native Nancy Kassebaum Baker received an honorary doctorate degree before her commencement address to the graduating class of 2015.
Kassebaum received her education at Topeka High School, graduated from the University of Kansas in 1954 and received her Master of Arts in diplomatic history from the University of Michigan. Kassebaum was elected to the U.S. Senate in 1978, and has had ties to K-State through the Landon Lecture Series.
Kassebaum’s thoughts on Friday’s graduates were congratulatory as she advised new K-State Alumni to “seek balance for a changing world order”.
“It’s very reassuring to me that our basic values will remain the same”, Kassebaum told graduates as she spoke of technology advancing at an incredible pace and political turmoil presenting itself in ways Kassebaum advised graduates be aware of.
