school board 5 6 15Budget deficits and potential cuts continue to highlight Manhattan Ogden USD 383 agendas.  During Wednesday night’s meeting, a budget steering committee work session was held before the school board meeting, with additional discussion featured during the actual meeting as well.

Questions were raised regarding the future of the funding in reference to the block grant.  “We will know something within 2-4 weeks”, stated Superintendent, Bob Shannon.

Shannon went on to say, another discussion that still needs to take place involves how to maximize the replacement of the $600,000 shortfall for the current school year.

In connection with the budget cuts that have to be made, Athletic Director, Mike Marsh shared a recommendation on how to make up for athletic-related deficits.  He requested the board approve a $1 increase in adult tickets for varsity sports.  The last time there was an increase in ticket prices was in 2009.

Board Member, Darell Edie commented, “this is a no brainer to me”.  The item was approved unanimously.  The ticket prices will be increased from $5 for adults, to $6.

In other business the board also approved a policy revision to the drug free schools policy.  The hope is that the additional language will provide descriptions and definitions that will better explain the purpose of the policy.

The board also narrowly approved the teacher and administrator contract non-renewals on a 4-3 vote.
