LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) After almost 50 years together, the portraits of two scientist-brothers have been removed from a soon-to-be razed University of Kansas residence hall that is named after them.
The Lawrence Journal-World that Elmer and Burton McCollum’s portraits will now overlook students studying their respective sciences on West Campus. Elmer McCollum discovered vitamins A and D, while Burton McCollum was a seismology pioneer.
Celebrated area artist Daniel MacMorris painted the portraits in 1966. He’s best known for painting murals at the Liberty Memorial and the downtown library in Kansas City, Missouri.
But the school had to find new homes for the McCollum Hall fixtures because the dormitory has closed and is facing the wrecking ball later this year. It is being replaced with two new dorms that are opening this fall.
