Schoen says body camera rollout ready for August

Riley County Police Department Director Brad Schoen told county commissioners Thursday morning that the department’s rollout of body cameras is still on track for August.

“You haven’t heard much about body-worn cameras lately, but that’s still on track,” Schoen said. “They should start going online in August. We got the training developed now, we have a schedule and have them all pretty much delivered and sitting downstairs waiting to go.”

The RCPD began testing body cameras last fall and they cost the department $6,000 for five years of use.

Schoen also told commissioners he’d completed his tour of communities in the county, and said citizens appear satisfied with their service.

“I’ve recently completed me ‘mini-tour,’ I guess, of all the outlying communities in the county,” he said. “At least once, if not twice I year, I try to make it out to Riley, Leonardville, Randolph and Ogden.

“Generally speaking, everyone seems to be relatively pleased. I always invite them if they have any concerns or gripes to air them at that time.”

In other items, commissioners approved an amendment to the Capital Improvement Project fund to include polymer overlay on three bridges in the county and they also renewed the county’s agreement with the Kaw Valley Rodeo to include beer sales.

The commission also accept Doug Messer’s resignation as an Ashland Township Trustee and appointed Patrick O’Neal in his place.
