UPDATE: Nichols Murder Trial Continues

0
By KMAN Staff on July 29, 2015 Local News, Manhattan, Riley County, Top Story

Anthony NicholsThe Anthony Nichols trial continued Wednesday afternoon in Riley County District Court with several more testimonies from law enforcement connected with the 2013 murder case.

Among testimonies given was Alan Alan Riniker , a crime scene investigator at the time of the incident with Riley County Police. Riniker, who said he’s investigated over 100 homicides throughout his career, told the jury his observations of the scene where John Burroughs was killed. Among observed scene evidence by Riniker was a barely-smoked cigarette with blood on it found in the bedroom where Burroughs may have been shot.

Later questioned was detective William Arnold Jr. with the Junction City Police Department over cyber-forensic work connected with the case. Arnold Jr. explained how the data collection process worked with cell phones and internet files such as text messages, GPS location and Facebook messages. Arnold Jr. explained evidence possibly pointing Nichols to the scene of the crime as it was uncovered by Senior Deputy County Attorney, Barry Disney. Cyber evidence showed Nichols was in Manhattan around the time of the murder, however did not directly connect Nichols with the crime.

This trial is scheduled to continue tomorrow, and KMAN will continue updating.

###
A Kansas City man’s jury trial started Tuesday with jury selection taking up the entire morning and into the afternoon. Anthony Nichols is accused of murdering John Burroughs, a Manhattan Country Club employee, between the 6th and 7th of September 2013. Burroughs was found dead on his bathroom floor in his residence, a result of one gunshot wound to the face and eight stab wounds to his body. Nichols has already been convicted in a Geary County murder that happened just days after the murder of Burroughs.

During opening arguments, Nichols’ attorney claimed there is no evidence connecting Nichols with the crime scene, and a key witness in this trial is withholding vital information connected to this murder. According to the defense, the witness named Tina Love is the only witness connecting Nichols to the scene of the murder. Love has also reportedly been inconsistent with her side of the story over two years of interviews with law enforcement.

Several witnesses were called to the stand Tuesday, including law enforcement from both Riley County and Junction City. A testimony by Burroughs’ manager at the time, Dave Kelly, described Burroughs as a wonderful employee who always showed up to work on time.

This trial is expected to continue through Friday. KMAN will continue to report updates as this trial proceeds.
