Riley County Commissioners tabled a request to extend the Native Stone Scenic Byway Monday morning.
During a June meeting members of the Native Stone Scenic Byway Committee and representatives from the Kansas Department of Transportation presented the concept to commissioners of extending the byway into Riley County along K-18 East to the intersection with K-177 and thence south along K-177 to the county line.
County Planning and Special Projects Director Monty Wedel said there were little regulations to the extension, except for the fact billboards would be prohibited due to federal statute.
While the extension would provide federal dollars and grants to the county, commissioners shared in concerns presented by multiple residents who expressed their hesitation on the extension in the Commission Chambers, including Bart Thomas of Thomas Outdoor Advertising, Inc.
