Despite increased post security measures requiring visitors without Department of Defense ID’s to apply for a visitor’s pass, the annual Fort Riley Apple Day Festival attracted thousands.
The weather for Saturday’s event was ideal for the families exploring the festival grounds. At the main stage, the Kansas City Chiefs Cheerleaders held trivia games for children, and local gymnastics and martial arts groups gave performances. Later on several musical groups including the Kansas City Bettys, Fort Riley Spouse’s Choir and 1st Infantry Division rock band made appearances.
To one side of the main stage, vendors including the Fort Riley Pie Queens sold their merchandise. 1,500 pies were baked by the Fort Riley FRG the week before the event and were sold out by the end of the day. On the other side of the main stage, military equipment littered the lawn for children and their families to learn about. Military working dog and bomb squad demonstrations continued throughout the day alongside historical reenactments.
