Manhattan/Ogden school district begins search for new superintendent

USD 383 LogoSchool board members at Wednesday night’s USD 383 meeting kicked off their bi-monthly discussion with the approval of a contract with the Kansas Association of School Boards for the search, interview and background check process of potential candidates for the opening superintendent position in the district.

KASB representatives laid out their plan with the school board for finding a new superintendent to fill the shoes whom superintendent Bob Shannon is leaving behind this summer. They pointed out that this search will not only involve the efforts of the board, it’ll also involve the efforts in the community when it comes to finding potential candidates with qualities needed to fill the large position. The KASB search team detailed their four-step selection process, which includes application acceptance, interviewing and background checking each candidate. The board concluded to go more in-depth with the team out of Topeka at a later date before moving on to the remainder of their agenda.

During his normal verbal report to the board, Shannon reminded board members, educators and the community of their bus schedule change for Thursday’s KSU/Baylor football game, mentioning safety is the top priority of kids in the district during times of such heavy traffic in the area. The superintendent also encouraged the public to attend the upcoming Veteran’s Day parade through the heart of Manhattan, as hundreds of USD 383 children were involved in the community celebration.

Before wrapping up their meeting with the vote and approval of facility use fees, an Amanda Arnold Elementary childcare office addition, and an additional ESOL support request, the school board listened to an annual report of the growing Manhattan Virtual Academy online education service that the district provides as an alternative to traditional classes.

The next regular USD 383 school board meeting is scheduled for November 18th. The board will cover course proposals and changes throughout the district, a financial audit report and an annual communications report.

To hear from the board members themselves over a few of these presented meeting items, tune to KMAN on 1350 AM, 93.3 or 93.7 FM.
