RCPD warns of phone/gift card scam

    0
By KMAN Staff on November 25, 2015 Local News, Manhattan, Riley County, Top Story

RCPD BadgeThe Riley County Police Department has received several reports of a caller contacting community members and stating that they have missed jury duty.

This caller then states he is a member of the Riley County Police Department and is calling to address a warrant in the community member’s name. Next, the the community member is asked to purchase a gift card and recite the gift card numbers over the phone (at which time the caller accesses the gift card and collects the money).

The RCPD does not conduct business in this way and will never call a community member and ask for gift cards to take care of an outstanding warrant. Scams are often designed to be believable and prey on persons of an older age so the Riley County Police Department would like to remind you to help keep your elderly family and neighbors informed of this potential scam.

If contacted by someone claiming to be an employee of the Riley County Police Department feel free to confirm this call by contacting the department directly at 785-537-2112. If you believe you have become a victim of a crime or online crime contact RCPD or www.ic3.gov.
