The Manhattan High boys and girls basketball teams will play for tournament titles on Saturday night in the Hays Shootout.

The MHS girls (2-0) had a strong second half performance to pull away from the Newton Lady Railers, winning 46-34. MHS led 6-5 after one quarter and the game was tied at 14 at the half.

The Indians outscored the Lady Railers 20-4 in the third quarter which proved to be the biggest difference in the outcome. Newton was ranked #4 in class 5A according to the Kansas Basketball Coaches Association. Madison Mittie led all scorers with 20 points, 18 coming in the second half. Gigi McAtee pitched in with 12 points.

The Lady Indians will face either Hays or Great Bend in the title game on Saturday night at 5:00.

The MHS boys (2-0) was impressive for a second consecutive night and held off a feisty Garden City team, winning 66-57 to advance to the championship game. The Indians led 16-15 after the first quarter and would take a 36-24 lead to locker room at the half.

Garden City (1-1) fought back to make it a 49-45 game going into the fourth quarter but MHS made enough plays and free throws to get the win. Four players were in double figures led by Gabe Awbrey’s 13 points. Grant Munsen and Cade Roberts each had 11 and Trevor Hudgins finished with 10.

The Tribe will face either Olathe North or Hays in the title game Saturday night at 7:00. Both the boys and girls championship games can be heard online at 1350kman.com starting around 4:45.
