    Wamego City Hall

The Wamego City Commission heard the results of the 2015 audit at Tuesday’s meeting. City Manager Merl Page introduced Reece and Novelly’s Michele Morton, who went over the 2015 audit for the City of Wamego. According to Morton, the audit showed no unmodified opinions and no major changes in the City’s cash position from last year. In the auditor’s notes, Morton said there were no non-compliance issues and no deficiencies.

However, the auditors did suggest some procedural changes in the Police Department, Library and Fire Department. Those changes included cross-training of staff, training in accounting and internal controls for an understanding of bank statement reconciliation. A motion was made to accept the audit as presented and passed by a vote of 5 to 0.

In other business, the Commission set the Budget Work Session for July 25th at 5:30 p.m. in the City Office, with a Special meeting to begin at 6:30.

The Wamego City Commission was in an approval mood Tuesday night. City Manager Merl Page said he’d met with members of the Street Advisory Committee who had concerns with the design of the 4th Street project. Page said it was pointed out to him there was no standard width of the curbs along 4th street, and the committee felt modifications needed to be made in the design before the bids could be approved.

Page asked the Commission to recommend asking the design team to reject all the earlier bids until the modifications could be made for standard widths of all the curbs, than ask for rebid of the project. The motion was made and passed by a vote of 5 to 0.

In other business, Page said he received the contract from Riley Construction for the City Office Security Project, which was reviewed by City Attorney Jake Pugh, who approved the contract. A motion was made to accept the contract and passed by a vote of 5 to 0.

Also, the Commission approved the Carnival contract for next year contingent on review of the dates submitted for next year’s event. Approval was 5 to 0.

The Wamego City Commission looked at Recreation Advisory Boards recommendations. Page said he met with the Rec Advisory Board on July 13th to discuss the relationship with Crossroads Soccer. According to Page, the Rec Advisory Board felt the Crossroads Soccer Association should pay a small fee for use of the soccer fields since it is not a Recreation Department sport. After discussions, Page asked the Commission to recommend the City and Recreation Department get together with Crossroads Soccer to go over the current standing agreement to get clarification for use of the facilities without a formal contract. A motion was made to authorize Page and the Rec Advisory Board to come up with the plan to present to Governing Body. It passed by a vote of 5 to 0.

In other business, the Commission approved the Central Elementary “Run Back to School” event for Saturday, August 13th from 7:30 to 10 a.m. This event will require blocking off Elm Street from 6th to 8th. The vote was 5 to 0.
