It’s going to be a dangerously frosty weekend in the Flint Hills.
The National Weather Service in Topeka has issued a wind chill advisory for the KMAN-listening area in effect until noon Sunday.
NWS says freezing drizzle north of I-70 will gradually diminish Friday night. An Arctic airmass will begin to surge southeast through the area tonight and will cause any wet and untreated roadways to refreeze. Light to moderate snowfall is expected to overspread the area late Friday night into Saturday afternoon and end that evening. As the cold air continues to build in, dangerously cold wind chill values will develop Saturday and Saturday night.
Wind chill values of 15 to 20 degrees below zero will be common Saturday night and Sunday morning.
Hazardous travel conditions are expected from freezing drizzle and refreezing of wet roadways Friday night. Snowfall accumulations of 1 to 3 inches are expected Saturday with some blowing and drifting snow also expected.
Wind chill values this cold can result in frost bite and could led to hypothermia if precautions are not taken. Anyone who must venture outdoors are advised to wear a hat and gloves, along with additional layers.
