Citywide ‘Spring Cleanup’ to begin Monday in Manhattan

The City of Manhattan’s annual Spring Cleanup will be April 2-6.

City crews will pass through each neighborhood once, according to the assigned days for pickup, and collect properly bagged and stacked yard waste, tree limbs and branches.

Residents should follow these tips to ensure their items are picked up:

    • Place all yard waste (grass clippings and leaves) in yard waste paper bags, which are available at many local retailers. Any debris in plastic bags will not be picked up.
    • Create separate piles on the curb for yard waste and limbs and branches.
    • Stack branches in a loose pile; don’t use rope or twine to tie them together. Do not mix scrap lumber with branches. Participating refuse contractors will pick up scrap lumber on regular trash pickup days and at regular locations.
    • Have items on the curb and ready for pickup by 7 a.m. on the scheduled day. Crews will check each area only once.

The City will not pick up any items other than yard waste. Participating trash providers — A1 Trash Service, Average Joe’s Trash Service, B&L Trash Service, Howie’s Enterprises, and Joe Mallon Trash Service — will pick up other trash and debris during their normal route but only for their customers. Extra trash and debris must be stacked next to the location of regular trash pickup on the day of regular service. If residents do not have a contract for refuse services with one of the participating contractors, they are responsible for their own disposal.

The following items will not be collected during the cleanup event: major household appliances, tires, batteries, concrete or rock rubble, and construction or demolition debris. Household hazardous waste — paint, thinners, lubricants, herbicides, insecticides — also will not be collected and should be taken to the Riley County Noxious Weed Department, 6245 Tuttle Creek Blvd., for proper disposal.
