Manhattan, Kan. – K-State finally got some breathing room on Saturday and weren’t forced to play catch up. K-State led the whole way in the afternoon matchup with the UT San Antonio Roadrunners.
UTSA won the toss and elected to kick it to the Wildcats which paved the way for KSU’s inaugural first half touchdown of the 2018 season. Skylar Thompson took the reins for the Wildcats and pushed the ball down the field after getting help from UTSA with two free plays after offsides calls. Thompson connected with Zach Reuter on a 37-yard pass to set Kansas State up at the UTSA 23 yard line. K-State would finish the drive with an Alex Barnes touchdown run.
A few drives later the Roadrunners would answer and tie the game at seven, but that would be the closest the game would be all day. Kansas State would go to score 34 unanswered points on UTSA, highlighted by touchdowns in the air from Thompson to Dalton Schoen on a 42-yard pass and then a 23-yard touchdown pass to Isaiah Zuber.
Thompson wouldn’t just get touchdowns in the air on Saturday afternoon, he also used his legs on a 27-yard touchdown run to give the Wildcats a 34-7 advantage over the Roadrunners.
Alex Delton would enter the game in the second half to spell Thompson and on the first drive led by the redshirt junior, Delton hit Isaiah Zuber for a 72-yard touchdown pass and be the final score of the day for the Wildcats.
K-State’s starting defense would only allow the seven first half points and hold UTSA clean the rest of the way, the final ten points being allowed by the reserves for the Wildcats which totaled up for the final score of 41-17 in favor of Kansas State.
Up Next: Kansas State starts Big 12 play next Saturday as they return to Milan Puskar Stadium for the second time in three years to start conference play. West Virginia had the weekend off after their game with NC State was canceled due to Tropical Storm Florence. WVU won their first two games of the season against Tennessee (40-14) and Youngstown State (52-17). Kansas State has lost two consecutive games to West Virginia after winning every conference meeting until 2016.
