GARDEN CITY — A conflict across the world in Myanmar has reached into a refugee center that for years has helped immigrants who arrive in Garden City to find jobs.
The LiveWell Finney County’s Neighborhood Learning Center, has provided a place for refugees to bond, learn English and adjust to life in the U.S. after they arrive in the western Kansas town.
Refugees from Myanmar once known as Burma brought along tensions between the predominantly Muslim ethnic Rohingya minority and the Buddhist Burmese. The Rohingya blame the Buddhists for a purge that has caused hundreds of thousands to flee Myanmar.
The Kansas News Service reports the Rohingya have mostly stopped coming to the center because they are uncomfortable near Burmese.
