Manhattan city commission discusses potential city-wide sales tax; reviews goals and priorities

County-sales tax
The Manhattan City Commission discussed whether it wants to renew a county-sales tax set to expire in 2022 during a goal-setting meeting at the Flint Hills Discovery Center Friday.
The half-cent sales tax has been in place since 2002 and has gone towards roads and bridges, property-tax reduction, infrastructure and local business incentives.
City Manager Ron Fehr says while the commission is likely in favor of renewing the sales tax, the question is who will it affect going forward.

Fehr explains some of the reasoning behind a city sales tax.

Goals and priorities

The commission also reviewed goals it has been able to accomplish over the past year or two.
Fehr says work on some of the goals set for 2019 will continue to be worked on in 2020 and 2021.
Here, Fehr describes some of the projects the city is currently working on.

According to Fehr, the next two years are a focus for the commission since the current members will be around for that period of time, including two newly elected members in Mark Hatesohl and Aaron Estabrook.
Organization Excellence Initiative
City commissioners also discussed the city’s Organization Excellence Initiative during the meeting.
City Manager Ron Fehr explains what the OEI is.

He also says the financial effects of the OEI will vary.
