Kansas State University wrapped up its MLK observance week with a special tradition.

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr’s legacy was celebrated Friday with a laying of wreaths at the MLK bust in front of Ahearn Fieldhouse. University leaders spoke briefly at the event. K-State is proud of its MLK connection and celebrates his legacy with a host of activities during a week-long recognition. K-State Student Union Adviser and Multicultural Student Organizations Program Coordinator Brandon Clark spoke with KMAN about the celebration.

It was 52 years ago, Jan. 19, 1968 that Dr.  King Jr. spoke at K-State, less than three months before his assassination. King delivered a speech in front of 7000 people outside Ahearn Fieldhouse, addressing racial inequality and nonviolent solutions.

Friday’s program was held after a candlelight ceremony which preceded it. Chief Diversity and Inclusion Officer Bryan Samuel spoke at the ceremony after a long moment of silence for Dr. King. Samuel admired how Dr. King wanted “all human kind” to have liberty.

Also K-State held events throughout the week to honor Dr. King. Events like the MLK day of service, several guest speakers, and the sixth annual civil rights teach in were held during the observance week. Samuel is pleased with how the university honors Dr. King and believes K-State has a “special relationship with Dr. King”.

Clark wants to see progress continued in fighting against inequality.
