Manhattan-Ogden USD 383’s summer STEM program is set to begin soon, and will be completely online.
Due to both K-State and USD 383 campuses being closed, the summer program is taking place online for the first time. Woodrow Wilson Principal Deb Nauerth (North) says this is a new year and new challenge for them as they go online.
STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering , and Math. These programs allow students to concentrate on certain areas they are interested, that may not get covered throughout the school year. Marlatt Elementary Principal Sheila Stevens says for example they have a first grade teacher teach about drones, and even an english teacher who taught in Minecraft.
Executive Director Paula Hough says students will be able to use the district’s online canvas platform to get assignments and turn them in. While the the entire program ins online, the teachers are still going to have ways for hands on learning. They will also have special guests students would have typically gone to see.
Students will also be able to hear from K-State professors on what they can expect at the college. This is part of their partnership with the university and the college of education to encourage students to get into the STEM fields.
Marlatt Elementary Principal Sheila Stevens says their biggest strength is the STEM showcase, which they will still have this summer.
The summer STEM program starts on June 1st. Parents can still sign their students up on the district’s website.
