It has been 19 years since one of the most tragic days in American History, 9/11. Fort Riley is holding an event to remember those fallen during the tragedy.
Colonel Will McKannay, Fort Riley Garrison Commander, says that the annual 9/11 memorial will still take place on Friday at 10 A.M. The event will stream live over the Fort Riley Facebook page. McKannay talks about the day of the attack for him, and the importance of the commemoration.
“My wife was also in the service at that time. Pretty much both of us knew at that time that the rest of our careers weren’t going to be the same. You could just tell from that day, that it wasn’t just going to be something that was over when that day ended and I think that’s why it’s so significant that we do continue to recognize it now, being 19 years later and we continue going forward because it was one of those really key change moments for our country,” he said.
McKannay also mentions that the Fallen Hero Run will take place this Saturday at 9 A.M. He says this is another way to support those who have fallen during terrorist attacks.
“It’s a two mile untimed fun run with some other events going on out there to commemorate the sacrifices. There’s boots for fallen soldiers connected here to our division in Fort Riley will be out on display. You know pets, strollers, it’s a family event,” said McKannay.
Several events take place each year to commemorate the tragedy that happened on September 11, 2001 and KMAN wants to take this time to thank those who have served and continue to serve our country.
