Pawnee Mental Health raised over $24,000 Thursday as part of Grow Green Match Day.
The 24 hour online fundraiser supported by the Greater Manhattan Community Foundation provided 70 Manhattan area organizations an opportunity to collect donations, which are pushed even higher thanks to a 50 percent match on some donations from the Howe Family Foundation.
Pawnee Mental Health Executive Director Robbin Cole says no matter the size of the donation, each makes a difference in lives around the community.
She says Pawnee will use their funds toward the purchase of a generator at the Crisis Stabilization Center, located on Hayes Drive in east Manhattan. The center is an 11-bed facility for adults facing mental health crises. It operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and 365 days a year. Cole tells KMAN that right now if the power goes out at the unit, it creates several hardships.
“We have no lights, no heating in the winter, no air in the summer,” Cole adds. “We do have a battery backup that keeps our phones and computers powered for 12 hours, but if we have a power outage that lasts longer than 12 hours, then we even lose phones and computers at the CSU.”
Cole says that is a weighty thought and weighty responsibility for her, to think about folks in the middle of a mental health crises to be in a facility without power.
“You just don’t realize, I mean, I think we all know that we’re dependent on power to keep our lives going, but wow. When the power is gone it really has a significant impact on your life.
