Four more Riley County residents have died from COVID related complications.
Three of the individuals who passed where fully vaccinated and in their 90s.
The fourth individual was an 89-year-old female tested positive for COVID-19 back in January, and passed away on June 1st. COVID was a contributing factor, and records indicate she was unvaccinated.
Their deaths bring the total number of COVID-related deaths in the county to 49.
While there were individuals who were fully vaccinated pass away this past week, they are exceptions according to Health Department Director Julie Gibbs.
In Wednesday’s update, Gibbs says the majority of vaccine breakthrough cases have mild symptoms, and have not needed to be hospitalized.
“The deaths underscore the importance of those who are not vaccinated to get vaccinated. It is the unvaccinated who are putting our vulnerable population at risk,” says Gibbs.
Riley County has identified 146 new positive Coronavirus cases and 102 additional recoveries since the last report on July 21.
Eleven COVID-positive patients, including two who are fully vaccinated, are currently under care at Ascension Via Christi Hospital in Manhattan. Five unvaccinated patients are in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).
The two week positivity rate is at 8.83 percent, or 207 positive cases out of 2,343 total tests.
