Outdoor enthusiasts, October is for you

Boating, glow sticks, s’mores, and prizes- that’s all part of the 2021 Little Apple Glow Paddle.

Travis Schulte, Pottawatomie County Game Warden, tells KMAN as the fall season sets in, more outdoor events fill the calendar. One event that he is particularly interested in, is the Little Apple Glow Paddle, which he says has taken place the last few years and has been a great success. He adds that it is a great family event, with more than enough to do.

“They do costumes, they do a decorate your boat competition, and they will do s’mores and some other things later that evening after the paddle.”

Schulte adds that even if you don’t have a vessel to get out on the water, he says just being at the event is fun too.

“Everybody wears glow sticks and, you know, paints their whole thing up with glow paint, and then goes out for the evening and just paddles.”

The Little Apple Glow Paddle is October 23 from 7 to 9PM at Tuttle Creek River Pond. To find out more about registration, visit mhkprd.com.

One event isn’t all that is filling the calendar for the outdoor enthusiasts. The fourth annual Kansas River trash cleanup is nearing as well.

While the sounds of picking up trash may not sound as enlightening as glow sticks and s’mores, Schulte says it is something that is necessary, and an event they have held for four years now.

With the help of volunteers and The Friends of the Kaw, a trip is taken down the Kansas River to clean up trash as well as old battery cases. Schulte, tells KMAN the old battery cases are their main target, as they have been littered upon the sandbars for over 40 years now. He talks more about the cleanup event.

“They’re going to do a launch from the highway 24, Blue River Bridge ramp. They’ll go down stream into the Kansas River, start making piles of trash, and we will actually have two or three full vessels that are shuttling the trash from the sandbars to the boat ramps.”

He adds that volunteers must be completely self-sufficient. He talks more about what you need to bring as a volunteer.

“A life-jacket, bring your own vessel, whether a canoe or kayak, food and water, make sure you have sturdy shoes, gloves.”

For those interested in doing the dirty-work, the Kansas River cleanup is set for October 9 and begins at 8AM. To register, visit the Friends of Kaw Facebook page under their events tab.
