FEMA has announced federal disaster assistance has been made available to 53 Kansas counties affected by the Dec. 15 severe storms and straight-line winds.
Federal funding is available to the state, eligible local and tribal governments and certain private nonprofit organizations on a cost-sharing basis for emergency work and the repair or replacement of facilities. Riley, Clay, Geary and Wabaunsee counties are all part of that major disaster declaration.
Federal funding is also available on a cost-sharing basis for hazard mitigation measures statewide.
The federal assistance was approved Friday by President Joe Biden at the request of Gov. Laura Kelly on Jan. 24.
“This federal assistance will go far in getting things back to normal in these counties,” said Kelly. “We are grateful to the president for approving this request.”
The declaration also activates the Hazard Mitigation Grant Program statewide. All counties are eligible to apply for funds to prevent or reduce long-term risk to life and property from natural hazards.
