Riley County Commissioners have proclaimed November 2022 as Native American Heritage Month. Commission Chair Greg McKinley says the State of Kansas is historically home to many native nations including – the Kaw, Osage, and Pawnee.

McKinley noted that Kansas is currently home to four federally recognized native tribes: Prairie Band Potawatomi; the Kickapoo Tribe in Kansas; the Iowa Tribe of Kansas and Nebraska; and the Sac and Fox Nation of Missouri in Kansas and Nebraska.

McKinley also proclaimed Small Business Saturday is November 26. Here is a couple of the many reasons he spoke of to celebrate Riley County’s small businesses:

Nationwide, there are nearly 32 million independent businesses. Last year, over 23 billion dollars was spent at independent retailers and restaurants on Small Business Saturday. The U.S. Small Business Administration notes small businesses need their communities’ support now more than ever as they navigate, retool and pivot from the effects of the coronavirus pandemic. SBA suggests supporting local businesses throughout the season.
