Kansas State University will be relocating its indoor track facility from Ahearn Fieldhouse, following unanimous approval this week by the Kansas Board of Regents.
The university had previously been approved to renovate the track, now looking to see the facility relocated to the existing indoor football practice building located at the K-State Athletics Complex on campus.
The move is a result of decisions to demolish the Natatorium and Gymnasium buildings that adjoin Ahearn – part of an effort by K-State administration to reduce what they call underutilized and inefficient spaces. Ahearn Fieldhouse will remain in place amid the razing.
The cost of the track relocation is estimated at over $10.1 million dollars and is projected to be finished by November of 2023. Funds are sourced from Athletics operating revenue and private fundraising efforts.
The new indoor facility will be adjacent to the current outdoor track facility, plans for which feature a 200-meter banked track as well as space for field events, locker rooms, storage areas and a nutritional fuel station. Spaces currently in the building will be moved to the new Shamrock Practice Facility as well as the new volleyball and Olympic training center.
