The Riley County Board of Commissioners signed a disaster declaration today, April 18th, activating disaster emergency plans to combat a wildfire burning in a northern section of the county.
According to a news release, “The declaration was issued because the fires near Indian Hill Road and Mariadahl Road imminently threaten to cause wide-spread or severe damage, injury, or loss of life or property in disaster proportion.”
Commission Chair Kathryn Focke signed the declaration, which will remain in effect for seven days unless an early continuation or termination is deemed appropriate.
The news release also stated the fire is burning a large portion of Pottawatomie County. Volunteers from all parts of the county are providing aid along with support from the Marshall County Fire Department.
Riley County Fire Chief and Emergency Management Director Russel Stukey has requested state aid and air support.
The fire started yesterday, but rekindled today and crossed the Blue River channel. An estimate on the amount of acres burned is not available at this time.
Residents in the area are encouraged to stay aware, as fire conditions could quickly change.
