Riley County Commission hears resolutions about sewer districts and Ashland fire station

Monday’s Riley County Commission meeting saw a presentation about the Lakeside Heights and University Park sewer districts. The presentation was given by Deputy County Counselor Shelly Woodard.

Woodard says that current material prices, a shortage of labor, and digging through rock has raised the expected price from $130,582 to $431,982. This ia a 43% increase in total costs.

A hearing was held with property owners.

A public hearing is needed to cancel the project and assess costs. A resolution is required to fix the assessment amounts and set the time for this hearing. The motion to set the hearing date and cancel the project was passed.

A new fire station is needed in Ashland, says Emergency Management Director/Fire Chief Russel Stukey.

Stukey requested that the Riley County Commissioners consider advertising bids for a new fire station. RCFD #1, Station 102, Ashland has been identified by Fire District staff and the Board of County Commissioners as the next station to build. Bids were sent out in Spring, and all bids came in above budgeted amounts. They were subsequently rejected.

Stukey says the costs should be lower this time.

The proposal would be the second attempt to get a reasonable bid. A motion was made to direct RCFD to advertise for bids, and the proposal was passed.
