Trial begins for Wamego man accused in Fentanyl-related overdose death

Prosecutors presented several witnesses Tuesday as the first full day of testimony was heard in a Pottawatomie County trial for a man accused of distributing fentanyl that led another man to overdose.

21-year-old McKaine Farr is charged with a single count of distribution of a controlled substance, resulting in death, for knowingly distributing counterfeit tablets, laced with fentanyl to 21-year-old Jayson Ebert, of Wamego. Ebert died in September 2021.

Pottawatomie County Attorney Sherri Schuck called three law enforcement officers Tuesday. Among them was Wamego Police Chief Paul Schliffke, who confirmed the initial investigation on site as well as the initial arrest.

Witnesses confirmed that Ebert was initially given CPR, but was pronounced dead shortly after arriving at his home in Wamego. A search warrant was issued, and the responding officers found fentanyl, ketamine, and cocaine. Much of the paraphrenalia found on site tested positive only for ketamine.

Witnesses testified to the presence of a baggie with 6 pills inside, sold to Ebert by Farr. Paraphernalia on site included a plastic card, a rolled up dollar bill, straws, and plates that contained the narcotics.

The state will continue to present its case as the trial resumes Wednesday in Westmoreland. Judge Jeff Elder is the presiding over the trial.
